How to Prepare for Your Facial
5 min read
You have booked your facial appointment, and you are looking forward to it. Whether it is your first facial or your fiftieth, a little preparation can make a real difference in the results you experience. Here is how to get the most out of your upcoming treatment.
In the Days Before Your Appointment
Pause active ingredients. If you regularly use products containing retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, or benzoyl peroxide, stop applying them at least 48 to 72 hours before your facial. These ingredients increase skin sensitivity, and combining them with professional exfoliation or extraction can lead to unnecessary irritation or redness. Your esthetician can advise you on the specific timing based on your products and the type of facial you are receiving.
Avoid sun exposure and tanning. Sunburned or freshly tanned skin is more sensitive and reactive. Try to minimize direct sun exposure for at least two to three days before your appointment. If you must be outdoors, wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen and a hat. If your skin is sunburned, it is better to reschedule rather than risk further irritation.
Skip waxing, threading, or laser treatments. Any hair removal on the face should be done at least a week before your facial. These treatments leave the skin temporarily sensitized, and combining them with a facial too soon can cause discomfort or adverse reactions.
Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your facial helps your skin respond better to treatment. Hydrated skin is more supple, absorbs products more effectively, and tends to have less sensitivity during extraction if that is part of your treatment.
The Day of Your Facial
Come with a clean face if possible. If your appointment is early in the day, simply wash your face with your usual gentle cleanser and skip makeup, sunscreen, and other products. If your appointment is later and you need to wear makeup during the day, do not worry. Your esthetician will begin with a thorough cleansing. However, arriving with a clean face gives more time for the actual treatment steps.
Skip the coffee (or at least cut back). Caffeine can make your skin more sensitive and reactive. If you tend to experience redness or flushing, consider reducing your caffeine intake the morning of your appointment. This is especially relevant if your facial will include extractions.
Avoid working out right before. Exercise increases blood flow and body temperature, which can make your skin more reactive during treatment. If possible, schedule your workout after your facial rather than before, or leave at least two hours between exercise and your appointment.
What to Tell Your Esthetician
Communication is one of the most important parts of getting a great facial. Before your treatment begins, let your esthetician know about any skin conditions or sensitivities you are currently experiencing, any medications you are taking (including topical prescriptions), whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding, any allergies to skincare ingredients, and what your current home skincare routine looks like. This information helps your esthetician customize the treatment to your exact needs and avoid anything that could cause a negative reaction.
What Not to Do After Your Facial
Your post-facial care is just as important as the preparation. For at least 24 hours after your treatment, avoid direct sun exposure and apply sunscreen diligently if you go outdoors. Do not apply makeup for at least several hours to allow your skin to breathe and absorb the benefits of the treatment. Skip your active products (retinoids, acids) for 24 to 48 hours. Avoid touching your face, and do not pick at any areas that were extracted.
The Bottom Line
A facial is an investment in your skin, and a small amount of preparation ensures you get the maximum return on that investment. By following these simple steps, you set yourself up for a more comfortable experience and better, longer-lasting results.
